Taur Matan Ruak's Lucky Break

New Timor Leste President Taur Matan Ruak is congratulated by a former clandestine leader, Rosa Batista Cabral, who once saved his life during the Indonesian occupation.

According to Rosa, the new leader was seconds away from being discovered by Indonesian Special Forces in his hiding place at her home in Dili in the final year of the occupation. Had it not been for her agitations with the Indonesian troops, TMR may well have never lived to enjoy a free Timor Leste. In all likelihood, had he not escaped detection by sneaking out the back of a secret chamber in Rosa's house that night, TMR would probably be dead.
